You could get a base model in FWD for a few years. These things were pretty expensive in the US when they first came out, and Americans never fully understood or appreciated what a Grand Tourer car was supposed to be, so they sat on lots for a while.
There are conversion kits that allow a WRX sourced 5 speed manual to be swapped in, making it more of a sports car than a GT.
